Miguel Ortega — Quality Control

Miguel's story with huaraches began at age 11, when he first learned to pull nails, attach straps, and finish a sandal by hand. Two generations of his family had already dedicated their lives to the craft before him, and over time, he simply never left.

Today, with 45 years of experience, Miguel oversees quality control — inspecting every single pair that leaves the workshop to make sure nothing goes out the door unless it's right. His favourite part of the process is mounting: carefully pressing the insole onto the wooden last, securing every piece in place before the weaving begins. He knows that if this step isn't done perfectly, nothing that follows will be either.

"I'm proud to know this craft. Making huaraches has supported my family my whole life — and I want you to know that what you're holding was made well."
